Theobromine, L Theanine and Tyrosine

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the potential cognitive benefits of certain nutrients, such as caffeine, theobromine, L-theanine and L-tyrosine. These compounds have unique effects on the body and brain, and have been studied for their potential to improve cognitive function, such as attention, memory and alertness.

Caffeine is a stimulant that is found in a variety of foods and beverages, such as coffee, tea and chocolate. It works by binding to adenosine receptors in the brain, which helps to increase the levels of certain neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and norepinephrine. This leads to increased alertness, improved attention and improved mood.

Theobromine, also found in cacao and chocolate, is a stimulant that is similar to caffeine but is thought to have milder effects. It is also known to have mood-boosting and energizing effects.  Theobromine is a naturally-occurring compound that is found in the cacao plant, which is the source of cocoa and chocolate. It is a member of the xanthine family of alkaloids, which also includes caffeine and theophylline. Theobromine is a mild stimulant that can affect the heart, the smooth muscle, and the central nervous system. Theobromine has also been studied for potential health benefits such as reducing inflammation, improving heart health, and even helping to prevent tooth decay.  It is important to note that theobromine is toxic to dogs and other animals that metabolize theobromine slowly, and consuming large amounts of chocolate or cocoa products can lead to toxic effects such as restlessness, muscle tremors, and an increased heart rate.

Cacao beans are the source of cocoa and chocolate products. Theobromine is found in higher concentrations in dark chocolate than in milk chocolate. Theobromine is believed to be responsible for some of the mood-boosting and energizing effects associated with chocolate consumption. It also has diuretic effects, which means it can increase urine production and may help to lower blood pressure. It also has been found to be a vasodilator and increase blood flow.

L-Theanine is an amino acid that is found in green tea, and is known for its calming and relaxation-promoting effects. It works by increasing the levels of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, and by stimulating the production of alpha brain waves, which are associated with a relaxed and focused state.

L-Tyrosine is an amino acid that is an important precursor to several neurotransmitters, including dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine and is thought to have cognitive-enhancing effects.

While these compounds have been studied individually for their cognitive benefits, there is also growing interest in the effects of these compounds when used together. A study published in the “Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition” in 2019 investigated the effects of a supplement containing caffeine, theobromine, l-theanine and l-tyrosine on cognitive performance. The study recruited a group of healthy adults and randomly assigned them to either a treatment group or a placebo group. The treatment group received a supplement containing caffeine, theobromine, L-theanine and L-tyrosine, while the placebo group received a similar supplement that did not contain these compounds. Participants were asked to consume the supplement before performing a cognitive test battery.

The study found that the supplement containing caffeine, theobromine, l-theanine and l-tyrosine improved cognitive performance, as measured by the cognitive test battery. Specifically, it was found that supplementation with the combination of caffeine, theobromine, l-theanine and L-tyrosine improved attention, working memory, and cognitive flexibility. The study also reported that the treatment group had a lower rating of perceived stress during the cognitive test battery than the placebo group.
